I know Nokia N77, N92, N96 etc perhaps meet my standards but they are not for me as for the pricing reasons : (I need a rather cheap mobile phone this time and am seeking all the 3G-HSDPA supported, front facing second camera to make live streaming video conferencing / mobile broadcasting, having VoIP and Wi-Fi (W Lan) support, third party software download support on the handset, push to talk, FM, DVB-T and DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) to watch live stream of TV channels, GPRS, EDGE, WAP-Internet surfing, Bluetooth and the GPS receiver, high pixel cam, video cam, Big Touch Screen, good battery life etc etc... but to my luck I am still hot with my search for such cheap smart mobile phone...hope any one could help me : (

Future challenges for Telecommunications Testing

Testing in the telecommunications industry is under huge pressure due to the tremendous change to deliver reliable, secure innovative services and products that constantly improve performance and deliver a flexible, reliable cost effective solution for the end users.

In the 1980s it was felt that the main challenge for telcomms in the UK was to provide basic fixed line telephony services. However since privatisation and the introduction of competition into the UK market in the mid 80’s, coupled with the arrival of technological leaps such as Mobile, Broadband, Internet, Cable TV, and Online television services (IPTV), the challenges have increased immensely. All this change has moved the telecoms sector a long way towards the ultimate goal of convergence of the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

One of the main drivers in the telecomms industry is the need for increased speed and bandwidth. The recently published government interim report into ‘Digital Britain’ by Lord Carter, includes a 22 point action plan which outlines the government's strategy for the UK's digital transformation, along with the upgrading and modernising of all wired, wireless and broadband infrastructure and making broadband available to every house in Britain by 2012. It also highlights the strategic importance that the telecommunications industry plays in the future of UK PLC and the need for ‘Superfast’ connectivity in order to keep the UK in the forefront of the telecoms revolution and to gain competitive advantage by doing so.
So what does this mean for telecoms testing?
In order to understand the specific challenges for the testing community one first needs to understand the complexity and diversity within the Operational Support Systems (OSS) Architecture and the associated commercial and financial pressures that exist to ensure first to market products, which perform and function in the desired manner.

Who is the ideal telecoms tester?
It is clear that the tester must possess skills and experience beyond the generic ability to write and execute tests. This is because of the varied range of functional areas (listed below) that telecoms testing encompasses.
• Billing
• Customer Relation Management (CRM)
• Service provision and repair (also known as ‘lead to cash’ and ‘lead to fix’)
• Collaborations - with other licensed operators (OLO’s)
• Technical Domain and Network access areas.
There is also a need to have the relevant expertise to facilitate testing across the products and services offerings, for example:
• Mobile applications
• Broadband and internet applications
• IPTV (Internet TV)
• VoIP (Voice over IP) applications
• Banking applications

However it is unlikely that a single tester would possess the experience to cover all of these areas and functions. The tester must communicate effectively as it is imperative that they can converse throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), with Business Analysts (BA), Designers, Developers, Third party supplies, Customers and End users throughout the different test phases such as in waterfall:
• System testing
• Integration testing
• End to End (E2E) testing
• Acceptance testing
• User Acceptance (UAT) testing
• Regression testing
• Non functional testing - such as Load and performance

There is also the issue of data to consider. This may result in the tester selecting or creating data for tests. Or in the case of the introduction of new platforms and data structures, there a need for data migration activities to take place, this means that the tester needs to have the capacity to understand and verify the transformed or migrated data.
Large telecoms companies are moving towards a simple standardised Service Orientated Architecture (SOA) that has an emphasis on reusability and common capabilities in order to deliver consistent customer experience. These architectures will support the full range of business activities including
Customer and Commercial management – Customer management, Billing and Payments
Service Execution Management – Service Inventory / Design, Service management (Network and IT)
Resource management – Domain management, Engineering workforce
Portfolio management
Enterprise information and management
Collaborations – Partners, Other Licensed Operators (OLO’s), Customers and users, Employees, Third party applications

Test environments can be complex and expensive to establish and maintain, it is common for environments to be shared by many systems and integration test teams, however this can produce a configuration management headache.
In recent years it has become popular for testing to be outsourced to offshore test factories with the aim of reduced cost and delivery timescales. The test factories provide automated regression test services which constantly run on the test environments to identify if any errors have been introduced as a result of recently delivered code.
In conclusion:
There are heaps of exciting challenges ahead for the teleco’s industry, with the consumer expecting better, faster innovative services and UK PLC depending on the successful realisation of greater business efficiency and the ability to export newly developed technologies. However it is clear that it is not possible to achieve any of these benefits unless the new services products and technological advancements are tested to ensure that they meet the high standard expected from consumers and the wider business community. 3G Technology: Present and Future Perspectives

India is the fastest growing and the second largest telecom market in the world. The telecom revolution in India has a long history and we have had the advantage of jumping evolutionary steps and taking many short-cuts.

3G is the third generation of telecommunication hardware standards and general technology for mobile networking, superseding 2.5G. It is based on the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) family of standards under the IMT-2000.
3G networks enable network operators to offer users a wider range of more advanced services while achieving greater network capacity through improved spectral efficiency. Services include wide-area wireless voice telephony, video calls, and broadband wireless data, all in a mobile environment. Additional features also include HSPA data transmission capabilities able to deliver speeds up to 14.4 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink.

Implementation of 3G
The first commercial launch of 3G was by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on October 1, 2001. The 2nd network to go commercially live was by SK Telecom in South Korea on the 1xEV-DO technology in January 2002.
In Europe, the first commercial network was provided by Telenor in December 2001 on the W-CDMA technology and in USA, 3G network was first provided by Monet Mobile Networks, on CDMA2000 1x EV-DO technology, but this network provider later shut down its operation. The 2nd 3G network operator in the USA was Verizon Wireless in October 2003.
According to the latest data, about 190 3G networks were operating in 40 countries and 154 HSDPA networks were operating in 71 countries. In Asia, Europe, Canada and the USA, telecommunication companies use W-CDMA technology with the support of around 100 terminal designs to operate 3G mobile networks.

3G in India

Airtel and Vodafone
From August 2008, the Apple iPhone 3G is available in India on Airtel and Vodafone. Apple iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the iPhone SDK.

MTNL 3G 'Jadoo'
In December, 2008 the state-owned Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) announced the 3G mobile services, ‘Jadoo’, currently available to select high-end users of MTNL mobile services in Delhi and Mumbai. The service will provide an array of choices to its subscriber’s high-speed internet on mobile, video-calling, video surveillance and live TV. MTNL will have the first-mover advantage in the 3G space in Delhi and Mumbai.

BSNL : Chennai Gets 3G
After MTNL's Jadoo in Delhi and Mumbai, BSNL has launched 3G services in Chennai in February, 2009. The city will now be able to experience the magic of faster internet on mobile phones. By month end, almost 12 cities in India will get a taste of 3G mobile telephony from BSNL.

Issues
Although 3G was successfully introduced to users across the world, some issues are debated by 3G providers and users:
• Expensive input fees for the 3G service licenses and agreements
• Numerous differences in the licensing terms
• Large amount of debt currently sustained by many telecommunication companies, which makes it a challenge to build the necessary infrastructure for 3G
• Lack of member state support for financially troubled operators
• Expense of 3G phones
• 3G networks use the KASUMI block crypto and a number of serious weaknesses in the KASUMI cipher have been identified.
• Lack of buy-in by 2G mobile users for the new 3G wireless services
• Lack of coverage, because it is still a new service

3G evolution (pre-4G)
The standardization of 3G evolution is progressing in both 3GPP and 3GPP2. The corresponding specifications of 3GPP and 3GPP2 evolutions are named as LTE and UMB, respectively. 3G evolution uses partly beyond 3G technologies to enhance the performance and to make a smooth migration path.
A 4g network is in the pipe line, capable of speeds of 100Mbit/s while moving and 1Gbit/s stationary. This however will not see the light of day until at least four, or even eight years time when they have the right equipment to use it. By that stage, bandwidth will be all around us to take advantage of.
WiMAX is a telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes, from point-to-multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access. The technology provides up to 72 Mbit/s symmetric broadband speed without the need for cables. This makes WiMAX a technology of choice as a backhaul for 3G, especially in a country like India where villages are far flung and isolated.

Beginning With Broadband

So you have bought your computer and entered the 21st century but for a piece of technology that so many people told you would change the way you would communicate it is so very, very slow. You need broadband.

Broadband will make your communication abilities faster, broadband will speed up your download times and broadband will ensure that you are connected to the information highway 24/7.

If you are a first time computer user then the idea of broadband must seem fabulous but what exactly is broadband and how exactly does broadband change your communication abilities?

There are a variety of different definitions of broadband available. Verio.com defines broadband as

“A transmission medium capable of supporting a wide range of frequencies, typically from audio up to video frequencies. It can carry multiple signals by dividing the total capacity of the medium into multiple, independent bandwidth channels, where each channel operates only on a specific range of frequencies.”

Other definitions of broadband are equally confusing to the ‘computer newbie’. Basically broadband is a “.... communications medium that uses wide-bandwidth channels for sending and receiving large amounts of data, video or voice information.”

If you have cable TV then you are already a consumer of broadband technology as cable TV utilises wide bandwidths to provide your service. Broadband is a technology that allows a wide bandwidth to be used to transmit a lot of information at the one time. This means that upgrading to broadband will get you your requested information faster and having broadband will mean that you can send information faster. Simply put there is more room on a broadband connection for more information.

Once you have made the upgrade to broadband you will never look back. The speed that comes with a wide bandwidth is something you will wonder how you ever lived without. Broadband means the end of having to wait minutes for a requested web page to actually appear on your screen, an end to wondering if you wouldn’t just be quicker ‘snail mailing’ rather than e-mailing and broadband will connect you to the world of information that you didn’t even know existed, because it always took too long to download.

Upgrading to a broadband connection is a must to be able to get the most from the World Wide Web. Make sure you are not left behind as broadband sweeps through the web making information really at your fingertips.
